Guy Fieri is the king of Canada. They honor his portly bust and peroxide blonde locks every where you look. Embroidered dragons and man jewelry are insanely popular as a result. Lord Fieri's presence is omnipotent. People lick their fingers clean of animal fat every time his name is mentioned.

The Montreal Candiens (or Habs) allow fans to watch their practices for free every morning. They serve beer at 9 am. The slack-jawed hosers get completely toasted. I was here to shoot hockey star P.K. Subban. The only black person in Canada plays hockey. It's an upside down bizarro world.

Fancy Shepherd's Pie is the only thing Canada people eat. They also say bon jour all the fucking time. It's nice.

There are a lot of shitty French beers served on Canuck soil. They cost a lot and taste strikingly similar to 'Merican piss beer. The pint glasses make them look delicious though.

This font is a kissing cousin to comic sans. It's also the national type face used for everything in Canada. It makes Canada seem a lot more fun that it actually is.

The Tom Petty fan. Who are they? It's a tough nutto crack. A question for the ages. A riddle wrapped in an enigma, crapping inthe porta-potty of a conundrum. I've spent two decades of my lifetime trying todecode the Tom Petty cryptography. He seemingly has a fan base. He sellsrecords. He performs at huge concerts. The tickets for said concerts sell forastronomical prices. He's even been dubbed a Wilbury by Dylan, Orbison andHarrison (Jeff Lynne DOES NOT COUNT). But, why? How?

My sweeping generalizations:

Women - For some reason women like Tom Petty. Ithink it's because he looks like one of them, albeit after a steady diet ofdexatrim and Virginia Slims. The dude knows his way around a blow dryer too.Girls dig that. I also think his slight frame offers the "I could fit himin my pocket, squeeee!!!!" attraction. After all, he's not handsome. He'sgot a wobbly eye and a picket fence grill.

Summer Festival Concert Goers - These folks don'tnecessarily care about the music, as long as the festival is humid with linesthat stretch for miles to use the overflowing feces ensconced biffy toilet. WeFest? REO/Boston/Air Supply at the casino parking lot? It doesn't matter.They're there for the shitty beer and ditch weed. Maybe they'll get a chance tosee some sunburned pancake titty too. Roadies - Guys that set up the instruments and gearfor other bands seem to really get into Petty. Today was my first day at a new job. I was greeted with hugs and bagels. There was also a giant platter of lox to accompany said bagels. Superbeast readers know how I roll with the "bacon of the sea." I love that slimy shit.

A couple of quick notes from today. My pal Josh sent me a link about hybrid sharks off the coast of Australia. A scientific phenomena for sure, and likely the hell's bell toll of our final demise. When big sharks start boning bigger, meaner sharks, we can kiss our pasty, seal-like jaundice asses goodbye. We're doomed.

In other shark news, I listened to Peter Benchley's Jaws on audiobook as I combed through coastline and redwoods on highway 101. I've read the book before, and I've probably seen the movie 200 times, but I wanted to immerse myself in some research before floating a single beer coozy in the ice-cold waters that fill up the Bay Area. The big fish is the apex of the food chain in this abyss, and scarier to me then stepping in a freshly spiraled pile of hot bum shit (also big in these parts).

My pal Josh and I made a mad scramble to Portland this past weekend to check out the Portland Bazaar and maybe pick him up a new motorbike. He was eyeballing a 1984 Honda Nighthawk, the kind of bike Hasselhoff probably rode between scenes on the set of Night Rider. If Japanese anime was a motorcycle, that bike is on some Robotech shit for real. Anyway, the dude selling it never returned Josh's calls or e-mails after we had confirmed we would be coming down from Seattle. Thanks dick. Instead we looked at some Suziki piece of shit that was rusting out. No dice.

The trip was still worth it. A quick run through the bazaar looking at totes for dudes, an amazing meatball banh mi sandwich at the Lardo truck, pounding criminally delicious beers at Amnesia brewing, and howling with some good buddies was just what the doctor ordered. I like Portland.

Sometimes an amazing photo opportunity just appears right in front of your eyes. The lime green ghetto sled contrasting with the dark brown bungalow was just that.

The meatball banh mi from Lardo. One of the better sandwiches I've had in a while. It rivals the lemongrass/Elk meatball banh mi from the now defunct Nettletown.

This woman woke up and just puked Portland all over her bodice.

Some love from the buddies is a welcome distraction for this beast.

Taking occupy activism to heart, the American Indian Movement was founded in 1968 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The agenda? Spirituality, leadership and sovereignty.

In a big fuck you to the buckle-hats, AIM seized a replica of the Mayflower on the 350th anniversary of pilgrims landing on Plymouth Rock. In 1971 they overtook Mount Rushmore. In 1972 activists marched across the country on the "Trail of Broken Treaties" and took over the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

In 1973, AIM occupied the 1890 site of the Wounded Knee Massacre on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It developed into a 71-day siege involving the FBI, US Marshals and the National Guard. The Department of Justice banned the press from covering the stand-off.

The inventor/creator/omnipotent superbeast behind the quintessential stoner snack Jeno's Pizza Rolls has passed on. Pizza Rolls hold a special place in my arterial lining. Over the years they have been my one and only vice. A processed food stuff thingy that tip-toed the razor's edge of what human beings can and should consume. An ensemble cast of various meat parts, and scientifically composed food particle paste folded delicately in the womb of a deep friend pastry. They were little polyps of molten hot lava that exploded upon impact, scorching mouths all over midwestern small towns and cities.

Lou Bond. To The Establishment.

Light in the Attic records kills it with a bounty of incredible reissues from soul songwriters and troubadours from eras past. Lou Bond is no exception. He bounced around on the We Produce imprint of the legendary Stax label before disappearing into ether. He's as gifted vocally as some of his more popular peers from the early 70's, while maintaining a conscious message to most of his recordings. The little scat at the end of this song rivals Al Green's Memphis pastorals, with more depth than a typical love story. This is a 12-minute long eponymous powerhouse. "We might as well be free.."

This year the Lancaster brothers (Mancaster and Longcaster), old Sweet River, and yours truly set out for the second annual pheasant hunt at The Medicine Breaks in Presho, South Dakota. The trip was once again a success, and we managed to bring home a few more roosters this year. I snapped these instagram pics in between bowel movements and beer runs. Take a gander.

First shot, first blood. The killing fields were my field of dreams on Friday.

Back at the ranch we shot some clays and drank a few Bells Two Hearted Ales, one of my favorite midwestern brews. Real dude stuff. The boys had recently set up a professional grade clay thrower and we took it for a spin after a late afternoon run through the milo and cattails.

This is what we woke up to on Saturday morning. A little post-apocalyptic for sure, but still prime for roosters.

The South Dakota sunset. Alert the cocks, the dicks are here!

We caught this winged migration along highway 90, on our way back to the Twin Cities. There's so much wildlife in South Dakota sometimes you forget you don't see this shit everyday.

Red hot roller dogs at a two-bit truck stop somewhere outside of Mitchell, South Dakota. I could feel the kidney stones collecting in my urethra after one sniff of these chemically enhanced encased meats.

I spied this endangered beast at the SEATAC airport before departing to Minnesota. His pony was rich and luxurious. It had body. There was a nary a split end to be found. He wore it high on the back of his head to draw attention to its majestic sheen.

The Black Knight with Vulture standing atop a Volcano was my favorite of all the airbrushed semis we saw on highway 90. The driver was obviously influenced by Frank Frazetta and Molly Hatchet album covers. He also probably loved amphetamines, but that's just an educated guess.

There's nothing better than discovering new music with a little help from superbeast nation. Take Vigon for instance. My pal Mizz Mitten turned me on to this Morroccan soul crooner with a nod on Twitter.

Vigon was a vegetable vendor in Morocco before discovering soul music at U.S. bases in the early 60's. He became a minor star in Paris, covering American R&B numbers. His music is experiencing a bit of a revival over the past 4-5 years, with a smattering of vinyl reissues. Dig it.

The Etsy folks have been releasing these nice little documentary shorts for a while, but this one about Liberty Tool caught my eye. Store proprietor H.G. "Skip" Brack talks about sustainable tools and how they're accessible to local tradesmen and hobbyists.

Look no further than popular music advertising in the late 60's and 70's to witness some pretty cool, sometimes hokey conceptual thinking.

Aretha Franklin captured during the pinnacle of some soul stirring wail to the omnipotent. Perfect. This is what you imagine when you listen to Franklin.

Blue Oyster Cult with the shock and awe that helped make their music seem much meaner than it actually ever was. Mixing the church with an S&M gimp always seals the deal. Poor Rob Halford probably had this imagery firmly registered in his spank bank.

Ah, the unique selling proposition. Like their music, Black Sabbath chose a dark, minimal and bold message. Simple, unrefined. Black Country brick layers to the core.

A crafty diversion.

The all mighty Zep released Zeppelin IV with advertising that didn't mention their name anywhere. It was either genius or on some rare Spinal Tap level self-importance trip. Still, it added to the mythos perfectly. Music writers all over the states were ready to pan the new album. They didn't see this coming.

This billboard was placed smack dab in the middle of Sunset Blvd in 1971. I imagine the GTO's thought some Celtic marauders were on the verge of a rape and pillage pilgrimage to end all. That's actually exactly what happened. Quaaludes are crazy, man.

On paper, the idea of a psychedelic band with an epic soul vocalist wailing from the mountaintop makes perfect sense. In actuality, it's tough to pull off. Rotary Connection was one of the few bands to create this lightly treaded musical landscape. This kaleidoscope of influences. A complicated wall of sound consisting of California psyche, Chicago soul, and classical orchestration. A frog-licking trance masterpiece.

The band was conceived by Marshall Chess, son of Chess Records founder Leonard Chess, in 1966. He wanted to create music that couldn't be filed under typical blues or rock offerings. He called upon a little known rock outfit named Proper Strangers and then Chess secretary, Minnie Riperton.

Charles Stepney was appointed to produce the effort. His arrangements were brought to life by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, creating the hallmark, heavy, multi-layered topography of the Rotary Connection sound.

Dang. Willie McGee was one ugly dude. Hell of a ballplayer though. I dug some of my favorite baseball card memories of the homely base thief. I forgot how good Willie was. I remember him as sort of a journeyman guy that was a good fielder and an awesome baserunner. He won the NL MVP in 1985, and it wasn't on his good looks alone. That season he hit .353 and stole 56 bases. He's got a great bluesman name, and the face of a rabid weasel.

He played most of his career in St. Louis so I figured it an apt time to recall some of his past glory. I'm not sure why the Cards don't use his mug as a good luck charm. Seeing that twisted maw and catnap eyes might just scare the facial off those pesky Rangers. Go sportz!

I never really associated Halloween with evil. It's always been a day when you have fun dressing up with your friends and cashing in on huge quantities of high concentrated sugar. It's a day to celebrate the good will of your neighbors, even the dick down the street that wouldn't let you set up the launch ramp on his sweet, newly paved driveway.

Over the years I've dressed up in ZANY costumes like: a girl, a Knight in shining armor, Ernie of Sesame Street fame, and a character from H.R. Pufnstuf. Hardly a ghastly satan mongering ghoul in the bunch.

According to these bible thumpers, Halloween is a day to celebrate "ungodly images and evil characters." You can't make this shit up:

Whoa, this is sort of awesome. Underground filmmaker Kenneth Anger has teamed up with Italian fashion house, Missoni.

The end result is a dark, dark trip. I like it.

Anger is the guy responsible for such weirdo cult classics as Lucifer Rising and Rabbit's Moon. He's dabbled in themes of occultism with a brazen obsession with Aleister Crowley, while tapping into popular culture figures like Jimmy Page to help provide the musical landscape for his films.

The pairing with Missoni is an odd one, but the results are seemingly pretty interesting. Kudos to the company for embracing Anger's experimental imagery and surrealism. It definitely blurs the lines between advertising and art.

“I’m fascinated by Kenneth Anger’s use of color and his ability to transform a film into a three-dimensional texture, a fabric of images in movement,” explained Angela Missoni. About a month back I headed up to Salmon Le Sac, just out of Roslyn, to meet up with some pals for a little car camping and Yakima river rafting. I arrived in the shade of darkness, and the boys were already about 4 cases of ice cold Coors deep. I warmed my cockles next to the fire, and lit up a cigar kindly provided to me. Might as well settle in and commence maximum imbibing, I thought.

As the beer flowed generously, we made fun of people who rent camping gear at REI. We questioned the fortitude of those that view Airsoft as a competitive and worthwhile sport. We laughed about stuff, and drank more beers. Just as that warm buzz of 21st Amendment IPA was settling in, I realized my dear old dog Kubs was missing from his regular perch. The little bastard is getting up there in years, so I immediately calculated that he likely went wandering off into the woods looking for a place to find his eternal sleep. Turns out the little shit sauntered one campsite over to shack up with a couple of heavy-set girls in sweat pants. I donned my headlamp and went to investigate.

I'll never unsee what I saw.

I grabbed Lil' Lord Fauntleroy, who was in the midst of being coddled by a particularly surly young gal in full comfort regalia. They were feeding him fried chicken and potato chips.

I walked back to our site and approached the fire. The pals were wondering what I had witnessed. "You ever seen The Hills Have Eyes?"

About 20 minutes later, two snaggle-tooth ladies came stumbling towards our site. We exchanged pleasantries and they asked us where we were from. "Seattle," we said.

"Oh shit, we're from Seattle too! Where in Seattle?"

My buddy Dru answered without a hint of sarcasm, "Seattle."

"Oh...we're from Renton..."

We exchanged glances. Renton was a shit-hole hovel about 12 miles south of Seattle proper. As my friend Peezy would say, "it's one of those towns that you'll stop in just to take a dump in a laundromat dryer."

'Nuff said.

As the girls walked back to their campsite, the dudes and I conjured up a plan. As is customary on these rafting trips, a Flabongo was packed. A pink flamingo beer bong. We decided it was high-time we made a peace offering to our neighbors.

I assumed that this guy was a love interest to one of the snaggle-toothed sweethearts. He said the gloves were for "choppin' wood." I immediately thought "breaking and entering."

After Schrein-Time's wedding on Saturday, ol' Sweet River and I spotted a full on LARPing battle going on in the soccer field next to the Clise Mansion. There were at least 40-50 nerds playing NERF war with custom made guns, rocket launchers, blow-darts, swords, and dirt 'staches. This little critter was one of my favorites. An authentic 16 year old hesher. He was outfitted with long hair, a sweet moustache, an Iron Maiden shirt, and knee pads. His custom crafted weapon of choice shoots 6 separate NERF bullets up to 40 yards at a sniper's precision. He carried with him 4 separate firearms that were fastened in strategic places all over his body.

He reminded us of the little feral kid from the Road Warrior.

The rules of the game were complex, but essentially it was two teams against each other. Once you've been hit by a NERF bullet, you transform into a zombie and must use hand-to-hand weaponry like swords or staffs. Zombies are a major pain in the ass. The nerds were kind enough to let Sweet River play a round. He claims he shot 6 nerds, but all I saw was a lot of barrel rolls, and kamikazi style theatrics. His age really showed.

As the war correspondent, I have about 300 pictures of the blood-thirsty battle on my phone. I'll post a proper story on the siege soon.

Superbeast Gene Clark.

This has been the Summer of Gene Clark. A summer of self reflection, sailboats, and savage weekends on mountain tops and remote islands. Clark was a sage. The Byrds prolific songwriter from 1964 to 1966, his catalogue of recognized songs is immense.

The song "Some Misunderstanding" is off of the brilliant 1974 album No Other. The album came about behind a second chance effort by David Geffen to help revive Clark's stumbling career (although his solo contributions from the late 60's through the mid-70's are still mind blowing). The production is soaring. The songwriting impeccable. The content dark and brooding.

Spend some time with Gene Clark. A true superbeast.

Just in case one battered foot long Pronto Pup won't do. Now you can get a bucket of hot lard encrusted hot dogs to stuff into your gaping jowls. I was relatively tame this year. I ate one roasted corn on the cob, a handful of garlic fries, some apple cider, and one late night wannabe Pronto Pup. I still almost crapped myself.

The only image I nabbed from the Steely Dan concert was this one. Then a security guard who looked exactly like Willie Aames almost kicked me out for taking a picture. We threw peanuts at him for the rest of the night.

There's only one Seed Queen. I got close enough to smell her dementia.

It took me about 7 tries to nail this masterpiece. I like how he has fat balls.
