This is the first and second poster for the Minnesota Department of Health, Latino Youth STD/HIV awareness campaign that I've been working for what seems like an eternity. If you've ever worked with the state before, you're well aware of the layers and layers and layers of approval and revisions that go along with local goverment. After all that, stuff like this has to be approved by Tim Pawlenty, and Pawlenty believes that sexual intercourse is the devil's deed. Frankly, he's an idiot that thinks telling kids about condoms is bad thing. He likes to drive a 4 wheeler though!
We did 4 posters of completely different styles, a fake tattoo, a website, a flyer, a PSA radio spot, and a bunch of little web banner ads and the like.
For these posters, Chris Neil (AD) and I utilized the stencil graf stylie. And yes the headline is a word play, screw off.

I think it's hilarious to imagine T. Paw saying to himself, "Test your equipment before you ride."
Nice work on a shitty, government task. "These youngsters are too lazy to put on a condom. So, instead of dealing with the actual problem that put them at risk in the first place, let's ask them to call, make and appointment, pee in cup, get a shot in the ass to be tested for a life-threatening desease, most likely during their working hours. This way, they don't have to wear a condom. And the cycle continues." No Mas!
wonder if mn. latinos are miffed by seeing their signature black typeface set in upper and lower case...
do you set it in upper and lower case to please the academic graphic design establishment (seeing that setting a black face in all caps is a no-no to them) or do you set it in ALL CAPS to speak directly to an urban latino audience who traditionally set their's in all caps?

I don't know what "black type face" you're talking about, but the chromoly "test your equipment" line is set the way it is to mimic the name recognition seen from lowrider car shows. The crews all have their name in a gothic font like this, forged from chromoly and hanging from back windows or under the hood of the cars they're showing.
Is fisting considered safe sex?
Depends on what kind of fisting.
No one would describe the "fisting" you have coming as "safe".
I think if you fist through a hole in a sheet, it's considered safe.
You and Chris are coming up with some cool looking campaigns. Were any parts of the campaign in all Spanish? And did the State conduct any focus groups before running it, or did they trust their collective gut on this one?
Dan, the process was absolutely miserable. There were 4 rounds of focus groups, and countless reviews and revisions. Chris and I have about 5 seperate campaigns that we like like more than this one.
Each poster has an alternate all-spanish version.
a black or blackletter typeface is old school for gothic. they're the same thing.
d-town presents a heavy contigent of mexican nationals who roll around denver with their state of origin (chihuahua, durango etc.) set in all caps in a blackletter/gothic face across their rear windows. another example of this, although hardly latino, is the self-titled album cover, SUBLIME, set in an all caps/blackletter/gothic face.

Must be a Denver thing, as the majority of images we found from "Lowrider" magazine and local car shows displayed the opposite. Frankly, I don't think there is a standard, and it's far easier to read as a headline sans all caps.
