Brian Wilson with Mike Douglas. 1976.

An intimate Brian Wilson interview from 1976 where he talks honestly about the "lost years" and his drug abuse.

The Smile recordings were shelved and Wilson refused to leave his room for 2 and half years doing nothing but "meditating" and hoovering piles of cocaine. The physical and mental transformation was obvious. He gained weight, and his voice deteriorated as a result of chain smoking, and drug ingestion. He was also diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.

It wasn't until the rigorous treatment from controversial therapist Eugene Landy, that Wilson fully returned to reality in the early 80's.

The interview is noteworthy because of Wilson's casual and honest reference to his drug abuse, without sounding like he's had a "come to Jesus" moment. You'll never hear a celebrity today admit their failures so openly while vehemently taking accountability. You'll never hear a journalist question a celebrity with such pointed questions either. That makes Mike Douglas a superbeast in my book, and this video clip a YouTube win. It's not often that we witness such a unique moment in time and honest perspective from a true genius.
