The Art of Metal.

Good buddy Bill Lee and I went to see Mastodon last night at the Fine Line Music Cafe. I'll get to more about the actual concert in another post, but I wanted to give props to the artist associated with Mastodon's album covers and live film visuals.

Paul Romano is somewhat of a luminary artist in metal and grindcore circles. He's done a ton of album work for many bands of the genre. Check out his work here.

I was really impressed with the visual and film element of the concert. Most of it was mash-ups of various concepts used on the band's album cover art, but when it was actually put to the music it produced a face melting, mind bending, psychedelic experience that really added to the story lines of the music. I couldn't find the actual footage used at the shows, but these album cover pieces will suffice.

I think I suffered internal bleeding from the perimeter of the mosh pit, caused by a large contingent of short muscle dudes with shaved heads and go-tees. I'll get to that in another post, but the days of the scrawny long hair hesher/stoner metal head are over. I'll wistfully remember that group always...

I will be anxiously awaiting your concert review. Unfortunatley, the 4 tequila shot special got the best of me and the second half of the show is a bit of a blur. Par for the course I guess.
